For a country that is one twelfth the size of New Zealand, with only 9 million people and a continual struggle against existential threats, it is a remarkable achievement.Part of the making of \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Start-up-Nation-Israels-Economic-Miracle\/dp\/0446541478\" style=\"color: inherit; text-decoration: none; font-weight: bold;\">The startup nation<\/a>\u201d lies in the networking and training offered by the compulsory military service. However, not all Israeli citizens are required to serve \u2013<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/taubcenter.org.il\/eng-pon-2018\/\" style=\"color: inherit; text-decoration: none; font-weight: bold;\">approximately 1.9M Arab Israelis<\/a>are exempt from compulsion (although<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/arab-israelis-are-joining-idf-growing-numbers-officials-n724586\" style=\"color: inherit; text-decoration: none; font-weight: bold;\">increasingly more Arabs are serving<\/a>).Using part of a<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iataskforce.org\/resources\/view\/1520\" style=\"color: inherit; text-decoration: none; font-weight: bold;\">$5 billion (New Zealand dollars) plan<\/a>from the Israeli government to improve the social development of Israel\u2019s Arab population, young Arab entrepreneurs are establishing a \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/jewish-news-and-politics\/263337\/israel-arab-tech\" style=\"color: inherit; text-decoration: none; font-weight: bold;\">silicon wadi<\/a>\u201d \u2013 a hub of Middle Eastern tech within the startup nation.Sometimes these companies are<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/jewish-news-and-politics\/263337\/israel-arab-tech\" style=\"color: inherit; text-decoration: none; font-weight: bold;\">jointly run<\/a>with Arab founders bringing tech expertise and Jewish founders with business expertise. And, in the case of<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehybrid.io\/hybrid-program\" style=\"color: inherit; text-decoration: none; font-weight: bold;\">Hybrid<\/a>there are also mentorship schemes with the objective of building a \u201cmore inclusive Startup Nation\u201d.Although the investment from the government is large, this is not a story that gets much press. And, perhaps, neither should it. After all, cooperation among Israelis of all backgrounds is commonplace and hardly newsworthy.
